Joe Biden nominates veteran diplomat William Burns as CIA director.

Important Points to Remember :

  • US President Joe Biden announced William J Burns as his nominee for Director of the CIA.
  • He served in the US Foreign Service for 33 years and also served in a number of national security positions across five Democratic and Republican presidential administrations, is currently president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the oldest international affairs think tank in the United States.
  • Burns retired from the US Foreign Service in 2014 after a 33-year diplomatic career.
  • He holds the highest rank in the Foreign Service, career ambassador, and is only the second serving career diplomat in history to become Deputy Secretary of State.

Indian Navy to coordinate the largest coastal defense exercise Sea Vigil-21.

Important Points to Remember :

  • Indian Navy will coordinate the second edition of the largest coastal defense exercise Sea Vigil-21
  • The inaugural edition of the exercise was conducted in January 2019.
  • The two-day biennial pan-India coastal defense exercise will be undertaken along the entire 7,516-kilometer-long coastline.
  • The exercise is a build-up towards the major Theatre-level exercise TROPEX [Theatre-level Readiness Operational Exercise] which the Indian Navy conducts every two years.
  • SEA VIGIL and TROPEX together will cover the entire spectrum of maritime security challenges, including the transition from peace to conflict.  
  •  Exercise SEA VIGIL-21 will provide a realistic assessment of our strengths and weaknesses and thus will help in further strengthening maritime and national security.

National Youth Day celebrated on 12th January.

Important Points to Remember :

  • 12th January is celebrated as “NATIONAL YOUTH DAY” because, on this day in 1863, The Great Philosopher, the Great Inspiration of the Youth, The Embodiment of Indian Culture and Intelligence, Swami Vivekananda, the Great Spiritual Leader was born.
  • He stands as a Universal Icon of Youth for generations.
  • In the year 1984, the Government of India proclaimed that Swami Vivekananda’s birthday should be observed as “NATIONAL YOUTH DAY” from the year 1985 onwards.
  • In the proclamation, the attitude of Swamiji and the principles that he stayed alive and worked for could be an enormous source of appreciation and inspiration for the Indian Youth.

Nitin Gadkari launches eco-friendly, non-toxic paint developed by KVIC.

Important Points to Remember :

  • Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari launched an innovative new paint developed by Khadi and Village Industries Commission.
  • The eco-friendly, non-toxic paint, called “Khadi Prakritik Paint” is a first-of-its-kind product, with anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. Based on cow dung as its main ingredient, the paint is cost-effective and odorless and has been certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards.
  •  Khadi Prakritik Paint is available in two forms - distemper paint and plastic emulsion paint.

State News

Manipur becomes the 4th state to successfully undertake ULB reforms.

  • Manipur has become the 4th state in the country to successfully undertake Urban Local Bodies, ULB reforms stipulated by the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance.
  • The state has become eligible to mobilize additional financial resources of 75 crore rupees through Open Market Borrowings.
  •  Manipur has now joined the three other States Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana, who have completed this reform.
  • On completion of Urban Local Bodies reform, these four states have been granted additional borrowing permission of seven thousand four hundred 81 crore rupees.
  •  Reforms in the Urban Local Bodies and the urban utility reforms are aimed at financial strengthening of ULBs in the states and to enable them to provide better public health and sanitation services.
